Let an AI search your Gmail

When you reach the end of this page, you will be able to ask Claude or ChatGPT to find and explain emails in the Gmail account you choose. You will also know how to check its answer, keep sending under your control, and disconnect Gmail later if you want to.

First, the plain-English idea

Gmail becomes one of the AI’s tools

A connector or app is a controlled connection between an AI and another service. Here, that service is Gmail. It lets the AI find and read email when you ask a question that needs it. It does not make the AI automatically read your inbox all day.

Connect only an account whose email you are comfortable discussing with Claude. A work or school Google account may need approval from its administrator before it can connect.

Before you start

What you need

Choose your route

Claude or ChatGPT: use the one you already have

Both routes connect only the Google account you choose. The screens will look different, but the safe habit is the same: start by asking the AI to read, check the original email, and approve nothing you do not mean to happen.

Use Claude · Use ChatGPT

Route A: ClaudeOpen Claude’s Gmail instructions
  1. Open Claude and sign in

Go to claude.ai. Start a new chat.

WhyYour connection belongs to your Claude account.

  2. Find the Gmail connector

Use the + beside the message box, then look for Connectors and Gmail. If Gmail is not already available there, ask Claude a Gmail question; it can prompt you to connect Google when access is needed.

WhyConnectors are the part of Claude that can reach services outside the chat.

  3. Choose Gmail and connect it

Follow Claude’s connection prompt. It will send you to Google to choose the Google account you want to use.

WhyGoogle, not Claude, handles the sign-in.

  4. Check the address bar before you sign in

Only enter your password on a Google page whose address starts with accounts.google.com. Choose the account you mean to connect, especially if your browser has more than one Google account signed in.

WhyThis is the moment you choose which inbox Claude can use.

  5. Read the permission screen, then decide

Google may list permission to send email as well as read it. That is because Claude can draft, send, reply to, and forward mail. By default, Claude asks for approval before sending, replying, or forwarding.

WhyRead access helps answer questions; sending is a separate action you should review before approving.

  6. Ask one read-only test question

Use an email you can recognize. Replace the words in square brackets before sending:

Find my most recent email from [person or organization]. Tell me its subject and date, and do not change anything in my Gmail.

WhyYou already know roughly what you expect to find, so you can tell whether Claude used the right message.

  7. Check the source before you rely on the answer

Claude normally shows citations or links for the emails it used. Open the message in Gmail and compare it with the answer. For important decisions, treat Claude’s answer as a helpful summary and the original email as the record.

WhyA good habit here prevents a small misunderstanding from becoming a sent email, missed deadline, or wrong decision.

Route B: ChatGPTOpen ChatGPT’s Gmail instructions
  1. Open ChatGPT and sign in

Go to chatgpt.com. Start a new text chat.

WhyYour connection belongs to your ChatGPT account.

  2. Open Settings, then Plugins

Open ChatGPT’s settings and choose Plugins. Find Gmail, or the plugin or app that includes it. If you see Install plugin, choose it and continue with the setup flow.

WhyThat is where ChatGPT keeps the external apps it can use in a chat.

  3. Connect the Google account you mean to use

Choose Connect when ChatGPT asks, then complete Google’s sign-in screen. Only enter your password on a page whose address starts with accounts.google.com. If you have more than one Google account, stop and choose the inbox you actually want ChatGPT to use.

WhyThe connected account controls what ChatGPT can see; it does not get access to your other Gmail accounts.

  4. Review Google’s requested permissions

Read the Google permission screen before you approve it. If ChatGPT says all selected permissions are required, use its option to select fewer Google apps if you only want Gmail, then approve every permission needed for the apps you selected.

WhyAccount permissions, ChatGPT settings, and any work or school administrator rules can all affect what becomes available.

  5. Use Gmail in a chat

In a supported chat, type @Gmail before your question, or use the + menu to select Gmail when it is available. Some ChatGPT screens put this choice under More.

WhyThat tells ChatGPT which connected app you want it to use.

  6. Run the same read-only test

Replace the words in square brackets, then send:

@Gmail Find my most recent email from [person or organization]. Tell me its subject and date, and do not change anything in my Gmail.

WhyStart with something you recognize so you can check it against Gmail.

  7. Check the original email

Open the message ChatGPT used, if it provides a reference, and compare the original with the answer. Ask a narrower question if anything is unclear.

WhyThe original email remains the record, especially for decisions, dates, money, or promises.

Useful first questions

Start by reading, not changing

These are safe first jobs because they ask Claude to find and explain information. Copy one, change the words in square brackets, and send it.

Find the latest email about [topic]. Give me three bullets and link the email you used.
Show me unread emails from [person] in the last two weeks. Do not archive, label, delete, draft, or send anything.
Summarize this long thread in five bullets. Include the latest decision, the next action, and a link to the thread.

Ask for the original beside the summary. That is how you stay in the saddle.

Keep control

Three rules worth keeping

If you want to unplug it

Turn Gmail off or disconnect it

For one Claude conversation, turn the Gmail connector off from the connector controls near the chat box. To disconnect Claude completely, go to Customize, then Connectors, open the Google connection, and choose Disconnect.

For ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, choose the relevant Gmail app or plugin, open its account options, and choose Disconnect. Disconnecting stops future access; it does not automatically delete existing chats, saved memories, or data already in a conversation.

You can also review connected apps on your Google Account’s linked apps page. Find Claude or ChatGPT/OpenAI there and choose Remove access if you no longer want it to reach that Google account.

If something does not match

Quick fixes

I cannot find Gmail in Claude or ChatGPT
In Claude, ask a Gmail question in a new chat and look for its connection prompt. In ChatGPT, check Settings > Plugins. Availability can vary by plan, region, account, interface, and workspace settings. A work or school administrator may need to enable or approve it.
Google says access is blocked
That commonly means a work or school Google Workspace administrator has not allowed Claude. Ask the person who manages that account; do not try to work around the block.
Claude gives an answer but I cannot see the source
Ask it to link or cite the email it used, then open that email in Gmail. If it cannot show the source, narrow the question and try again.
Claude asks to reconnect
Disconnect the Google connection in Claude’s connector settings, then reconnect it and make sure you choose the intended Google account.
What this connection can and cannot do

A useful boundary

This guide was checked on October 6, 2026 against official documentation: Anthropic’s Use Google Workspace connectors and Gmail connector; OpenAI’s Connecting and managing app accounts in ChatGPT, Connected apps in ChatGPT, and Google app data controls FAQ. The screens and available actions can change, so use the labels you see on your own account.

You can do this one question at a time.
